Piltown welcomed Lisdowney on the 12th March 2017 for Round 1 of their JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior A League encounter. It was a very windy afternoon which impacted on both teams. Whilst Piltown dominated in the first half and were seven points up at half time, it wasn’t enough of an advantage & with the wind in the second half, Lisdowney managed to eat into that lead to eventually come out ahead with a one point lead at the final whistle.
Piltown had the wind with them in the first half & Philly Kenny opened Piltown’s scoring with a fine point in the first minute, followed by a point from a converted free from Lisdowney in the third minute. John Kenny opened his scoring of the afternoon with a point from a converted free in the fourth minute. Philly Kenny added another point in the sixth minute followed by a lovely point from MJ Farrelly shortly after. John Kenny added another from a converted free in the ninth minute. Philly Kenny won a Lisdowney puckout in the 12th minute and a quick pass to Jamie Norris resulted in a great point.
Lisdowney then scored their next two points, one from a converted free. John Kenny intercepted a Lisdowney ball and found Philly Kenny who passed it to Jamie Norris which resulted in a point in the 18th minute. The Piltown backs were defending well & a clearance from Conor Friend found John Kenny who skilfully scored a lovely long range point. Two more points from Lisdowney took us to the 21st minute. John Kenny was instrumental in Piltown’s next point, winning a Lisdowney puckout & with a short pass to Andrew Norris & a quick turn, Andrew sent the ball high over the bar. Lisdowney pointed another from a converted free in the 23rd minute before Aaron Gallagher found Jamie Norris who tapped over a great point.
Thomas Talbot, who was great in the air throughout the afternoon, won a Lisdowney puckout in the 23rd minute & found Andrew Norris who pointed again for Piltown. John Kenny kept the scoreboard ticking over with another point from a converted free in the 25th minute. Ian Long, working back, won a breaking ball and found Aaron Gallagher who in turn passed it to Andrew Norris who scored a great point. John Kenny closed out the first half with a point from a converted free. HT score: Piltown 0-14 Lisdowney 0-7.
Lisdowney opened the second half scoring straight from the throw-in. John Kenny & Lisdowney then traded points from converted frees, three from John & two from Lisdowney. Shane Walsh, defending well all afternoon, sent a ball up the line to Ian Long who found John Kenny and with a quick flick, John passed to Andrew Norris which resulted in a lovely point in the 43rd minute. Lisdowney, with the wind in the second half, dominated the remainder of the match scoring 1-8 (six points from play, one from a converted free & one from a 65). Ian Flynn closed out the match with a lovely point from a difficult angle. FT score: Piltown 0-19 Lisdowney 1-17.
