Round 4 of the Duggan Steel u-16 Hurling League took place in Piltown on Monday the 10th April 2017 when we welcomed neighbours Mooncoin. It was a tough, physical match and Mooncoin proved too strong for us in the end.
Mooncoin opened the evening’s scoring with a point from a converted free in the second minute. Shortly later, a fine clearance from Tommy O’Driscoll found Darragh Whittle and with a quick flick to Daryl Maye who made a run up the centre, Daryl sent the ball over the bar for a lovely point. Mooncoin followed up with two more points and Daryl Maye scored again for Piltown from a converted free in the seventh minute. Mooncoin’s full forward pointed in the 11th minute. Aaron Kinsella was tested in the Piltown goal many times and was certainly up to the test, pulling off many great saves during the match. Following one such save, Aaron cleared the ball to Darragh Whittle who linked up with Daryl Maye for another great point from Daryl.
Piltown’s Billy O’Callaghan and Mooncoin traded points from converted frees and in the 19th minute, a well-taken free by Mooncoin dropped in short and was flicked into the back of the Piltown net for a great goal. Piltown went on the attack but the ball was picked up by the Mooncoin goalie but a great block from Conor McGowan as he tried to clear it saw Micheal Norris swoop up the loose ball and he passed it off to Daryl Maye for his third point. Mooncoin added three more points to their tally and Piltown closed out the half with two points, one from Billy O’Callaghan from a converted free and one from Daryl Maye. HT score Piltown 0-7 Mooncoin 1-8.
Mooncoin, dominating the second half, opened the half with two points, one from a converted free. A Darragh Whittle shot at goal came up short in the 34th minute and the goalie’s clearance reached Daryl Maye who wasted no time in sending the ball over the bar. Two more points from Mooncoin, one from a 65 preceded a Piltown attack that was saved by the Mooncoin goalie and Piltown had to settle for a 65 taken by Daryl Maye. The final 15 minutes saw Mooncoin add four more points, three from converted frees and Daryl Maye, winning a Piltown puckout, closed out the match with a lovely point. FT score Piltown 0-10 Mooncoin 1-16.
